What is thymol ?

Thymol is a terpenoid, that is found in the essential oils of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Oregano (Origanum vulgare) and related species and has the characteristic smell of thyme.

Thymol (C10H14O) is often used in synthetic aromas for products with a Mediterranean flavour'. It is not or poorly soluble in water, but easily soluble in alcohol and oils.

Besides as flavour, thymol has also been used as a fungicide.
