What are vitamins?

Vitamins are organic substances that do not deliver any energy but are essential for cellular functions. They cannot be produced by the human body so they have to be obtained from the diet. The name is derived from vita (life) and amine (nitrogen-containing), as the first discovered vitamins all contained nitrogen. Even though not all vitamins contain nitrogen, the name is remained.
