542 Edible bone phosphate

Origin:
Produced from animal bones.

Function & Characteristics:
Used as anti-caking agent, emulsifier and source of phosphorous in food supplements. Main use, however, is in cosmetics (such as tooth paste)

Products:
Dry products, cane sugar

Acceptable daily intake (ADI):
Up to 70 mg/kg bodyweight.

Side effects:
Phosphates are normal essential salts for the body. In view of the need to avoid calcium deficiency, their use is limited, as they bind to calcium readily. They have no side effects.

Dietary restrictions:
542 can not be used by vegans, vegetarians, Muslims, Jews or Hindus. The product is made of animal bones, such as from pigs and cattle.
