E161g Canthaxanthin

Origin:
Natural colour, present in many plants and birds. Commercially prepared from catharelles (mushroom) or flamingo feathers. However, it is mainly produced synthetically from carotene.

Function & characteristics:
Orange food colour. Slightly soluble in water.

Products:
Widely used, also in tanning pills.

Daily intake:
Up to 0.03 mg/kg bodyweight.

Side effects :
No side effects known for the use in foods. Eye problems are common side effects when used in tanning pills.

Dietary restrictions :
None, E161g can be consumed by all religious groups, vegans and vegetarians.
